I have a Kelty Redcloud very similar to yours, and love it. Its been my workhorse for 8 years.

I have the steripen classic and love it. I've run 20 gallons through it so far and haven't gotten sick. Have you seen the goal zero solar systems? It would be perfect for charging the steripen on a thru hike.

Yes - Yellowstone is still a bit cold for camping in March, but I know people go up there and stay in cabins/hotels. I hear it's the best time to go (winter) because all the hot springs are steaming, the winter landscape looks cool, and best of all: NO PEOPLE! As I said in this report, it was PACKED with people and it's the major downside.

Jeff - you need to get down there to the Moab area. For a person with no kids, it's totally doable on a weekend (leave Friday afternoon, come back Sunday afternoon). People were already camping in some areas (lower elevation areas) along the Colorado River, or, like you said your Element is made for camping in, so take that.

If I were you I'd get down there every weekend if I could until I saw all the "highlights". Go do Arches one day and you can hike the Devils Garden loop (7 miles), then head over to see a few arches right off the road (sand dune arch, broken arch), then head over and see the famous "delicate arch" (3 miles round trip). The windows area is literally right at the parking lot, so you could explore around there an hour or so and see everything. There are obviously a lot of arch hikes off the map, but that would take some research to plan those out.

Canyonlands is pretty cool too. You went there with us, but the Needles section. Island in the Sky is north of Moab (whereas Needles is South). Like all National Parks, most of the things to see are right off the road, but it's still cool. You could do that on another weekend as well.

We're thinking of going camping somewhere in March. If this winter stays as mild as it has, the weather will be just fine somewhere down there in March for sure. I'll have to let you know when we're planning so maybe we can get together.

Fun little trip you guys did! Sorry the weather didn't pan out the way you had hoped for. False Kiva is a fun little hike. My friend and I took our oldest daughters out there last year and we really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We love Corona as well, Happy that Waylon did a great job for you guys.

Looks like an awesome trip. I don't think our family would get out much without you. I'm still thinking about doing something in mid March during my spring break. You don't think it's too cold to camp down there at that time of year do you? We may just sleep in our car considering we can make a bed out of the seats but we are also thinking about inviting some friends down there to go camping too. I still have yet to do Arches. I know that sounds pretty dumb since I go camping down South every year.

Oh my goodness you posted something. I was getting to think you were done blogging your fun trips. I and the girls were there the first week in Aug, and loved seeing all that we saw. Its a beautiful place! After we left our camp spot in Island park a bear attacked a man just outside our camp. Crazy! Next time I go I think I will invest in bear spray!

Ahh the beauty!! Nothing better than sharing it with the ones you love. We have made it a point to camp there and Tetons every year since we moved here and every year we get a rainy day but it is nothing bad, we still go rafting and it makes it so the trails are all yours. There's just too much to love and its all so wonderfully close. Still looking forward to meeting the newest root!! And it's never too late to make a awesome post :)

The link above gives directions for doing the hike from American Fork Canyon, otherwise known as the Timpanooke trail. We went up that way and down Aspen grove, we had left a car at Aspen grove though. The Aspen Grove parking lot is along the Alpine Scenic highway and is a popular route for sightseeing during non-winter months so it wouldn't be too hard to hitch a ride back around if you left your car at the Timpanooke campground.

The Timpanooke trail is steadier while the Aspen Grove trail is steeper, both are pretty, but usually there are more waterfalls on the Aspen Grove side.

Keep in mind that Mt. Timpanogos is covered in snow for a good portion of the year, you can usually only hike it in July or August.

Those pictures are all so amazing!! I long to be there now - I think the sand and storms just make it all the more memorable. We went Bryce one winter with the kids and could only do a few hikes because of the snow but that place is just incredible. It was nice though because it was just us and Ravens. What a fun trip!!!

Hey, I live in dallas and was bored at work today, looking for near city hikes to fly to and do on my days off. Basically all in all, im trying to find a good source describing the loop trail, i.e. how to navigate it, as a loop. because i know there are quite a few trails that cross, and what not. basically i wanna camp on the american fork canyon side. is there a way to go down the aspen grove, but still be able to make it back from where i started?
