Joes Valley September 2011

We took the opportunity with the Labor Day holiday to run down to our favorite reservoir to do a little camping, relaxing, and swimming. We met up with our friends James and Amber, and also my brother Jeff and his wife Mandi. We did a little fishing, some swimming, and hiked up the CCC trail on the East side of the lake to the over-look.

This lake is awesome because I still believe it's one of Utah's hidden secrets. There are many (especially in the outdoor crowd) that are aware of it, but every time we go there we feel like we have it all to ourselves. Rarely is there anyone at the cliffs jumping and rarely is there ever more than 2-3 boats on the lake. I love it.

Lots of rock jumping. We were jumping off the regular rock. The lake was a bit lower so the jump was nice. Could not jump off the middle stage rocks above because there wasn't enough depth in the water at the landing spot. James was using his GoPro for his jumps. Can't wait to see the footage on that and also can't wait to get one of those!

Joes Valley (and Left fork of Huntington Creek) 07.10.10

We broke away for the weekend to go to our favorite hidden gem in Utah, Joe's Valley reservoir. Every time we go there we are fortunate to see the reservoir with only a few boats.

On our way up, we took a scenic route through Huntington Canyon and did a short hike up the Left Fork of Huntington Canyon, which was amazing. This is actually a through hike into the upper joes valley area, but we only did about a mile up and back (Bailey was not going to sit in the backpack).

After hiking, we got back in the truck and drove to Joe's Valley reservoir via Orangevale. As soon as we set up the tent, Bailey was so excited and laid in the sleeping bag

We went over to the lake and busted out the raft to float around the lake a bit.

The dogs started to whine as we drifted to shore. Then Dexter just started swimming out to us

Debra soon followed

They looked so cute. They swam right out to the raft, expecting us to pull them on. It was so amazing to see how they naturally know how to swim

We went back to camp, had some dinner, then walked down to the lake to try to catch a fish (no luck)

It was a great trip and we had a great time. Can't wait to go back to this place.

Trip Report: Joes Valley

Had a wonderful over-night trip to Joes Valley area. We (Alene, Caiden, April, Bill and their children) left Saturday morning and arrive down there around 1 or 2pm?? Anyway, our plan was meet up with Clint and Annie and just hang out at the lake all day (no hiking). Alene is due to have the baby in a couple of weeks and she wanted a chance to just relax and soak in this beautiful reservoir.

Our campsite was located West and up above the reservoir off the Orangevale road. When we arrived to the area, we found what we thought were Clint and Annie's tent, but to be sure we checked the garbage bag to find out what kind of Beer they were drinking (it was Clint and Annie's). We set up our tents, then headed down to the lake and found them very quickly.

It was a great time, just relaxing in the water. We brought the raft my grandpa gave us and floated around in that for a while. Later in the day Bill, Clint, Caiden and I drove down to the rock cliffs which were fun to jump off of. I wanted to challenge Caiden a bit and see how high up he was willing to go to jump. He did an awesome job. However, I wasn't the only one doing the challenging. Clint and Bill decided to climb up behind the jumping rock and test out the bigger cliff that wasn't jumped off of often. After Bill and Clint had done it a few times, they finally coaxed me up there. The whole way I kept telling them I wasn't going to do it. I totally didn't want to. But, by the time I got up there, I had no choice. It really didn't look as bad. I went ahead and gave it a go and had fun with it. I was pissed though that I didn't have Caiden film it, so I went back the next day and had Alene film it. So, the challenge went through and lived up to it. I'm pretty sure I've never jumped from that high.

Anyway, toward the end of the day rain clouds began to form and so we packed up quickly and booked it back to our campsite just as the rain started coming down (our rain fly wasn't on yet). The rain went away later on and it made for a nice and cool evening.

The next day we went back and did a bit more swimming and jumping of course. Of course, the day got worse as we came home to a flooded basement, but that's life I guess. Here are some pictures and video clips of the trip:

Progression of the fat man jump

This was roughly a 25' cliff, which is the biggest I've ever jumped off of. For those of you familiar with Joes Valley, it's the cliff behind the standard jumping rock that everyone jumps off of. It looks impossible and like you have to jump out far, but it's actually just a step off the cliff and you're home free. Of course, this all depends on the water level.

Family trip to Joes Valley

We had a great family trip to Joes Valley a week ago. I think it's the first time the whole family has been able to be together camping. I wished it would have lasted longer.

We spent time boating (wake board/water skiing), jumping off the rock cliffs, fishing, and lounging around the campground. What a great time.

Here is the link to pictures. I'm creating a video slideshow of the trip (like Jeff did) and I'll post that later.

Upper Crawford Draw, Hidden Splendor Mine, Joes Valley, & Manti La Sal Natl. Forest

This past weekend we camped in the desert on one night, and at close to 10k feet the next. Only in Utah.

We followed Bill and April down Hwy 6 to the San Rafael Swell where our destination was up on the actual swell (not in front of the reef like we typically do). The first area we stopped at was upper Crawford Draw. Crawford draw is a drainage/slot canyon that is at the "headwaters" to the long and deep Straight wash/Eardley Canyon. It was amazing driving into the canyon Trailhead, crossing over the shallow wash which is crawford draw, only to see it faintly turn to a ditch, then abruptly come to a tall dry-fall and the slot begins from there.

We worked our way down into the slot and hiked as far as we could before we came to too many pools of water. We didn't really go very far, but for me it was neat to see the making of what becomes a very DEEP canyon.

From Crawford draw we took a drive out to McKay flat and on over to the Hidden Splendor mine area. This was another area of the swell that Alene and I had never been to. I had read up about the old airstrip out here that is still used occasionally. We parked a little past the air strip and April and Bill hung out while Alene and I went down into the Muddy Creek area and hiked back to the Hidden Splendor mine area to check out the mines and the "motel 6".

When we got back from our little jaunt Bill and April were anxious to get out of there because the gnats (or mosquitos?) were attacking like crazy being so close to the river, and it was mid-June and getting quite hot so we high-tailed it out of there to find a camping spot.

We ended up over at the Head of Sinbad on the north side of I-70 tucked back in this awesome campsite at the end of a long sandy road. The site was tucked in between two large sandstone cliffs and the back of it opened up to another large cliff that over-looked the Cactus flats area on toward Sids Mountain.

The sun setting was really lighting up the sandstone in the area

After a good nights sleep we got up and checked out the pictographs in the area, then ran over to see Dutchman Arch. While we were there we watched a cattle drive pass by.

Since it was so hot we opted to drive on through Orangevale on up to our favorite swimming lake: Joes Valley Reservoir. We weren't quite sure where we were going to camp this night, but we knew we could always camp up above Joes if we needed to as there are plenty of places to camp

We cooled off in the lake for quite a while (no pictures on this part of the trip), then headed on Westward up above Joes Valley driving on the Orangevale Rd, destination still un-known. While on our way up we saw several signs about bear warnings, suggesting to us that bears had been seen in the area. Keep in mind this was a week or so after that 10 year old boy was pulled from his tent in AF Canyon and killed, so we were a little nervous. We ended up at the top of the mountain just off Skyline drive in this small grove of pine trees and set up camp there.

The next morning we got up early after a bad nights sleep (relating to bear paranoia) and headed on down Ephraim canyon, into Ephraim, and on home.

In some ways, to me, this trip was kind of epic in that we saw a vast amount of scenery in two days. I kept thinking to myself where else one could be desert camping one day, then high mountain camping the next and it made me so grateful to live in this great state and be able to do this.
